Is Your Silk Scarf Genuine or Artificial?

It’s not an easy thing to tell the genuine silk scarf from the artificial scarf. Here are some useful ways to help you to distinguish whether your silk scarf is genuine silk or not.

1. The Burn Test
The most simple and useful way may be the burn test. The steps are also very easy.
Pull a loose thread from the silk product you’re trying to identity.
Then hold the thread over a nonflammable surface and light it on fire. Make sure that you extinguish the match or lighter immediately afterward. What should happen?
The thread should simply ball up and turn to ash when lit. And it will also give off the smell of burning hair. (Both substances mainly consist of a fibrous protein – fibroin in the case of silk and keratin in the case of hair.)
The ash should be black and crispy.
As soon as the flame is removed, the thread should do nothing more (no further burning).
If the silk is artificial, the smell doesn’t like burning hair, and the ash should not be soft and chalky.

2. Luster
Luster is the most important characteristic of genuine silk. It’s a result of the combination of threads of different single colors in each of the weft and warp. The effect gives a surface ‘shine’ and appears to change color as the angle of light on it changes.
If the silk are artificial, it will shine white, no matter what the angle of the light is.

3. Wedding Ring Test
This test does not apply to all silk, because some silks are much heavier than other. Usually, genuine silk of lower ply can be easily threaded and pulled through a wedding ring. This demonstrates how silky smooth and flexible real silk is.
Artificial one tent to scrunch up, making it difficult to pull them through.

With these tips, we can tell the genuine silk scarf from the artificial more easily.

Way to Wash Silk Scarf

Silk scarves are elegant adornments. We always want them keep the beautiful colors and shapes as new. If we hold the right way to wash them, it’s not impossible. Here is the way to clean the silk scarf by hand.
1. No matter you choose a soap or dishwashing detergent, be sure to test it on a small portion of the scarf to determine the colorfastness of the scarf. If the color of the silk changes in any way, consider using a small amount of delicate fabric soap.
2. If the soap or dishwashing detergent passed the test, then soak the scarf in lukewarm water with the soap or dishwashing detergent for about 2 minutes. You can also put a small quantity of salt in the water before washing the scarf. It can help prevent color from bleeding. Then you can rub the scarf gently.
3. Rinse the scarf in cool and clean water.
4. Add some vinegar, and rinse again. The vinegar will help brighten the color and shine of the silk. Be sure to rinse out all of the vinegar.
5. After the scarf is completely rinsed, squeeze softly to get excess water out and lay it flat in between two towels. If you need ironing, iron on a medium setting while scarf is still slightly damp.
It’s easy, right?
